Install Windows XP Professional

WARNING: If you following this tutorial, all data will be erased from your hard drive.

The purpose of this tutorial is to guide a user who wants to install Microsoft Windows XP Professional (with Service Pack 1) on a PC computer. It is assumed that all hardware components are already setup, and that the user either has a new hard drive, or does not want to keep any data on their hard drive. Enjoy!
  1. Make sure all hardware (monitor, power cords, cables, mice, keyboards, etc) are all setup before proceeding.
  2. Place Microsoft Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 1 Compact Disk (WinXPSP1 CD) into the CD drive and restart the computer.
  3. Make sure the computer is set to boot from the CD.
  4. When you see the message, "Press any key to boot from CD ...", press ENTER. This should be the only time you should boot from the CD.
  5. Wait for the CD to load.
  6. When you see the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press ENTER to choose, "To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER".
  7. If you agree with the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8.
  8. Press ESC to choose, "To continue installing a fresh copy of Winows XP without repairing, press ESC."
  9. Use the UP and DOWN ARROW keys to select any partitions on the computer. To delete the selected partition, press D.
  10. If the partition has an operating system on it, the computer will ask you if you want to continue. Press ENTER to continue.
  11. Deleting the partition will erase all data on that part of the Hard Drive. Press L to confirm deleting the partition.
  12. Repeart deleting partitions until only "Unpartitioned space" remains.
  13. After all partitions are deleted, press C to create a partition.
    At this stage, you may wish to create multiple partitions on your hard drive. Most users will only one partition, and this is recommended for beginners.
  14. By default, the maximum size for the partition should be entered. Confirm this, and then press ENTER.
  15. Now press ENTER to setup Windows XP on the selected item (C:).
  16. Select "Format the partition using the NTFS file system" using the ARROW keys, and press ENTER.
  17. Setup will now format your hard drive, which could take up to half an hour.
  18. Setup will now copy files to your hard drive, which might take several minutes.
  19. After copying files, Setup will restart the computer and continue with the installation process automatically.
  20. When the Regional and Language Options dialog box appears, click "Cusomize".
  21. Under "Standards and formats" section, click on "English (United States)" and use the scroll bar to select "English (Australia)".
  22. Under "Location" section, change "United States" to "Australia".
  23. Click on the "Languages" tab and, under "Text services and input languages" section, click "Details".
  24. Under "Installed services" click "Add".
  25. Set "Input language" to "English (Australia)", leave "Keyboard layout/IME" set to "US", and click "OK".
  26. Under "Default input language", change "English (United States) - US" to "English (Australia) - US", and click "OK".
  27. Under the "Advanced" tab, under "Language for non-Unicode programs" change "English (United States)" to "English (Australia)" and click "OK", and then "Next".
  28. Type in your name (eg. John Smith), then type in your organisation name, and then click "Next".
  29. Type in the product key (maybe found on side of computer or Windows XP CD case) and click "Next".
  30. Type in the computer name to identify it on a network (eg. computer1), and enter the administrator password twice.
    DO NOT LOOSE THIS PASSWORD.
  31. Set the right date and time. Under "Time Zone" select "(GMT+10:00) Brisbane", and click "Next".
  32. When the "Network Settings" dialogue box appears, contact your network administrator for the correct details. Alternatively, just click "Next".
  33. Enter the name of the workgroup (network) that the computer will be on. If unsure, leave as is, and click "Next".
    Setup will continue to perform installation tasks and then restart. This may take up to half an hour.
  34. At the "Welcome to Microsoft Windows" screen, click "Next".
  35. Click "Skip".
  36. At the "Register" screen, select "No, not at this time", and click "Next".
  37. Enter your name and then the names of other users of the computer, and click "Next", and then "Finish".
  38. Click your name to login.
  39. Eject the "WinXPSP1 CD" from the CD-ROM.
  40. Your are now ready to use Windows XP!
  41. When you are finished, click "Start", click "Turn Off Computer", then click "Turn Off".
  42. To use your computer again, turn the computer on, wait for it to load, click your name, and begin using Windows again.
